Overview
Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services
The Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (DVRS) is the designated state agency within the New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development tasked with assisting individuals with disabilities in obtaining and maintaining competitive employment. Headquartered at the Labor Building on John Fitch Plaza in Trenton, the division acts as a critical bridge between the workforce and individuals with physical, mental, cognitive, or sensory disabilities, ensuring equal opportunity and economic independence.
Core Services and Programs
DVRS provides a comprehensive range of services tailored to the specific needs of each client. Vocational counselors work one-on-one with individuals to develop an Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE).
- Vocational Counseling: Assessment of skills, aptitudes, and interests to identify suitable career paths.
- Job Placement Assistance: Support with resume writing, interview preparation, and connecting with inclusive employers.
- Supported Employment: Intensive, ongoing job coaching for individuals with the most significant disabilities.
- Transition Services: Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) for students aged 14-21 to facilitate the shift from school to the workforce.
- Assistive Technology: Evaluation and provision of technology to overcome barriers to employment.
Administrative Headquarters
The Trenton location at 1 John Fitch Way serves primarily as the administrative headquarters (Central Office) for the statewide network of DVRS field offices. It houses the Director’s Office and program management units. While direct client services are typically handled at local field offices (such as the Mercer County office on Yard Avenue), the Central Office oversees policy implementation and funding.
Access and Security
As a state government facility, the Department of Labor building maintains strict security protocols. Visitors are required to present valid photo identification and pass through metal detectors upon entry.
