Overview
Central Detective Division (Former 6th District)
The law enforcement facility at 235 North 11th Street is a critical operational hub for the Philadelphia Police Department in Center City. Historically serving as the headquarters for the 6th District, this station underwent a significant transition in 2024 when the 6th and 9th Districts were merged to form a consolidated patrol zone covering the expanded downtown area. While patrol operations for the newly unified 9th District are largely coordinated from the Public Services Building, this location remains the home of the Central Detective Division (CDD). This division is tasked with investigating serious crimes, including robbery, burglary, and aggravated assault, occurring within the city's central business and residential corridors.
Public Services and Reporting
Despite the administrative changes to the patrol districts, the 11th Street station continues to serve the public. It functions as a secure location where residents and visitors can report crimes, speak with detectives regarding ongoing investigations, or seek assistance in emergencies. The lobby is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ensuring that a police presence is always accessible in the busy Convention Center and Chinatown districts. The officers and detectives stationed here work closely with the community to address quality-of-life issues and support victims of crime through the investigative process.
Security and Visitor Protocols
As an active police facility, strict security measures are enforced. All visitors entering the building must pass through security screening, which typically includes metal detectors. Weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited inside the station, even for permit holders, unless they are sworn law enforcement officers. The use of cameras and recording devices is generally not permitted within the secure areas of the building to protect the privacy of victims, witnesses, and ongoing police operations. Visitors are advised to have valid identification ready when checking in at the front desk.
Location and Transit Access
The station is strategically located at the intersection of 11th and Winter Streets, directly adjacent to the Chinatown neighborhood and the Pennsylvania Convention Center. It is exceptionally well-served by public transportation. Jefferson Station, a major hub for SEPTA Regional Rail, is just one block away. The Market-Frankford Line (11th Street Station) is a short walk south on Market Street. Additionally, SEPTA Bus Route 23 runs north along 11th Street, stopping nearly in front of the station, while Route 45 runs south on nearby 12th Street. Metered street parking is available but often scarce due to the dense urban environment.
