The State Retirement Office, operating under the Office of the State Treasurer, manages the public pension plans for Vermont’s public servants. Located in the Pavilion Building in Montpelier, this division administers the Vermont State Employees’ Retirement System (VSERS), the Vermont State Teachers’ Retirement System (VSTRS), and the Vermont Municipal Employees’ Retirement System (VMERS). The office is dedicated to ensuring accurate and timely benefit payments to retirees and providing active members with the information they need to plan for their future.
- Benefit Management: Oversees the calculation and distribution of monthly pension payments, including cost-of-living adjustments (COLA).
- Member Services: Assists employees with enrollment, beneficiary updates, service credit purchases, and retirement applications.
- Financial Stewardship: Works with the Board of Trustees to maintain the fiscal integrity of the retirement funds through prudent investment and actuarial planning.
Member Support
The Retirement Office serves thousands of active and retired members across the state. Staff members are available to answer questions regarding defined benefit plans, deferred compensation, and post-retirement healthcare coverage. They also conduct informational seminars to help employees understand their vesting rights and payment options. While the office does not offer general financial planning, it provides the essential administrative support needed to navigate the state’s retirement landscape efficiently.
