Municipal Power Utility
The Burlington Electric Department (BED), located at 585 Pine Street, is the city’s municipally-owned electric utility. Recognized globally for its environmental leadership, BED has achieved the distinction of sourcing 100% of its energy from renewable generation, including the McNeil Generating Station (wood biomass), hydroelectric, and wind power. The department is currently driving the city’s ambitious Net Zero Energy goal to reduce reliance on fossil fuels in the heating and transportation sectors.
Customer Care and Billing
The Pine Street facility houses the Customer Service center, where residents and businesses can manage their accounts. Key services include:
- Bill Payment: Processing payments for electric services. Customers can pay in person, online, or via a secure drop box.
- Outage Reporting: Serving as the point of contact for reporting power interruptions or street light issues.
- New Service: Setting up or transferring electric service for residential and commercial properties.
Energy Efficiency Programs
BED offers a robust suite of incentives known as the ”Green Stimulus” to encourage sustainable choices. Residents can visit or contact the department to learn about rebates for:
- Heat Pumps: Incentives for installing cold-climate heat pumps for heating and cooling.
- Electric Vehicles (EVs): Rebates for purchasing new or pre-owned EVs and installing home charging stations.
- E-Bikes and E-Mowers: Financial support for switching to electric transportation and lawn care equipment.
