Central Motor Pool Overview
The Central Motor Pool (CMP) is a critical operational division within the New Jersey Department of the Treasury, located at 605 South Broad Street in Trenton. This facility serves as the central hub for the management, maintenance, and dispatch of the state’s official vehicle fleet. It is responsible for ensuring that New Jersey’s government agencies have access to safe and reliable transportation to conduct official business. Unlike public service offices, the CMP primarily serves internal state departments, managing approximately 6,200 vehicles ranging from passenger cars to specialized equipment.
Fleet Services and Operations
The Central Motor Pool provides a comprehensive suite of automotive services to state agencies:
- Vehicle Acquisition and Assignment: The CMP manages the procurement of new vehicles and assigns them to various departments based on operational needs.
- Maintenance and Repair: The facility houses a full-service garage staffed by mechanics who perform routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs to keep the state’s fleet roadworthy.
- Fueling Services: On-site fueling stations provide gasoline and other fluids for state-owned vehicles.
- Fleet Administration: The administrative staff tracks vehicle usage, fuel consumption, and compliance with state travel regulations.
Access and Security
Access to the Central Motor Pool grounds is restricted to authorized state employees, fleet coordinators, and approved vendors. The facility is secured to protect state assets, and visitors may be required to show valid state identification upon entry. Because this is an operational facility rather than a public office, it does not offer general services to the public such as driver’s licenses or personal vehicle registration. Prohibited items generally include unauthorized weapons and recording devices. Parking on-site is designated for state vehicles and employees; visitors typically utilize street parking or nearby public lots.
