Overview
About NSWC Philadelphia Division
The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Philadelphia Division (NSWCPD) is a premier research and engineering facility for the United States Navy. ⚓ Located within the historic Philadelphia Navy Yard, this federal command serves as the Navy’s primary technical authority for naval machinery. Founded in 1910, the division focuses on the research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT&E) of shipboard systems. ⚙️ Unlike a standard administrative office, NSWCPD is a hub of technical innovation, managing the lifecycle engineering for non-nuclear propulsion, power generation, and auxiliary machinery for surface ships and submarines. It also serves as the lead organization for cybersecurity of shipboard control systems.
Mission and Capabilities
NSWCPD employs thousands of engineers and scientists dedicated to keeping the fleet operational and advanced. Key capabilities include:
- Machinery Research: Developing next-generation propulsion and power systems, including electric drive technologies.
- Cybersecurity: Securing critical ship control networks against digital threats.
- In-Service Engineering: Providing 24/7 technical support to ships at sea to resolve complex mechanical and electrical issues.
Security and Access Policy
